The Garbage Patch State Embassy – MAXXI

← Back to the Portfolio

The “state of plastic” by the artist Maria Cristina Finucci celebrates its first year with the installation The Wave on MAXXI square in Rome and the opening of its first embassy, with whom the Master in Public Exhibit & Design of the “Sapienza” University of Rome has worked, through the exhibition “6 embassies to the State Garbage Patch“. The projects were carried out with Cecilia Cecchini, director of the Master and curator of the exhibition, with Master’s teachers, Marco Bevilacqua, Bianca Elena Patroni Griffi (for exhibition), Adriano Caputo (for lighting design), Emily Auriemma (for three-dimensional representation), Salvatore Iaconesi and Oriana Persico (for multimedia communication), with the head of the MAXXI Education Department, Stefania Vannini, with the architect Alessandro d’Onofrio and with the artist Maria Cristina Finucci. The design of public spaces and the use of multimedia communication are essential for the work of 12 students, who worked in pairs, Maria Olga Baracos, Lorraine Sanabria Isabel Baez, Roberta Di Vilio, Kandy Llamoca Inga Jesus, Blessed Magrini, Martina Malfatti, Anthony Marinelli, Marco Morosetti , Melike Sanli, Ilaria Savarese, Mariarosaria Sidonians, Carla Mireille Silva Felices.

The work, between design, architecture and multimedia communication, is aimed at giving visibility to a phenomenon unseen and unknown to most of us – Cecilia  Cecchini says – to sensitize the public and in particular children with whom the Department of Education of the MAXXI works, about the need for a conscious use of objects, not demonizing the plastics which are a indispensable resource for contemporary society, but promoting their sustainable disposal.

The issue of marine pollution is approached in a popularizing and educational perspective and each project has provided an interpretation about the embassy of that imaginary State, at the same time so real in its destructive action. The theme of the project also relates to digital cultures: the parallel between the State and the Garbage Patch digital citizenship is evident in the ability to cross cultures, nationalities, geographies, to create something substantially new and unexpected.
